The following is a brief guide to staying alive in the world of UO, for all those newbies that don't have a clue.

Firstly if you are new never venture too far from safety i.e. Town or a Guard because these places and people could be your saviour.

Now depending on what type of character you are trying to build it is best to start in different towns, here is a brief list of the best start location for each type of char:

Minoc

Minoc is an ideal place for a Miner/Blacksmith to be created because the mines are never too far away and the smith shops are well stocked.

Yew

Yew is far better for hunters/tailors/bowyers as the surrounding forests are rich in fauna and trees.

More to be added shortly..

If you are ever in town don't go out of your way to annoy a hardened warrior even though they are unlikely to kill you just for annoying them these people are your superiors both in Age, Strength and Intellect and will no doubt come to your rescue on more than one occasion.

Now depending on the path you have chosen for your character you will need to make lots of gold. It is best to choose a character with a career which is very profitable i.e. Tailoring or Bowying. Sometimes building one career can lead to another for instance if your started in Yew you could start off by tailoring but in the process of killing goats you will not only acquire valuable hides but also meat which can be used to raise cooking and then be sold in a shop in town.
